Year of Work: 2021
Location: Margaret River Youth Precinct, Wallcliffe Road
Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Description: When Kaiman asked local youth about their local and global concerns, they wanted a mural focused on improved mental health and the importance of preserving our natural environment.
The process began with guided two illustrations and design workshops. Over the course of a week, Kaiman completed the mural with assistance of budding artists from the Margaret River Youth Advisory Council Committee.
The mural encourages young people to connect with nature daily to support their mental wellbeing, and the flowers represent the native Flannel Flower, Australia’s national symbol to promote mental health awareness.

“I’ve created this piece with our community and mind represented by the crystal, which is blossoming into flowers. It can be interpreted that one’s thoughts are beautiful, or in a more literal sense of a positive impact on the environment. However, I encourage viewers to look for what it means to them.” – Kaiman.

Intervention in the Natural Landscape by Human Endeavour
Image source Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Artist: Ian Dowling
Asset Type: Sculpture, Mosaic
Year of Work: 2014
Location: Margaret River HEART, Wallcliffe Road
Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Description: This collection of ceramic sculptures commemorates the use of the Margaret River HEART building as the evacuation centre during the 2011 fires, and to honour the individuals and organisations who played a part in helping those impacted.
The overall theme of Intervention in the Natural Landscape by Human Endeavour highlights that in many cases the two can be in harmony despite extreme events.
12 sculpted forms integrate into the landscape, with surfaces of colour and textured patterns using individually made ceramic tiles. Patterns give the opportunity to generate rhythm and movement, evoking life and activity to the still objects. Text on the tiles honours organisations and individuals who contributed.
The ceramic-tiled smooth dome forms provide visual and tactile objects that can also be used as seats. The artwork is intended to be viewed and enjoyed with different layers of detail revealed at different distances. From a distance the shadows from the texture define the patterns and enliven the forms. At a closer view the texture of ceramic tiles comes into its own as the sense of touch dominates.
The colour complements the natural forms with brighter colours representing the new life and flowering after the fires.

Forest Stand
Image source Margaret River Art Trails
Artist: Monique Tippett
Asset Type: Sculpture
Year of Work: 2011
Location: Shire of Augusta Margaret River Civic Administration Centre, Wallcliffe Road
Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Description: Three trunks of solid jarrah timber reach to the sky, sourced from a 300-year-old fallen log found in a forest north of Dwellingup. It was likely lying on the forest floor for more than 50 years.
It represents the successful relationship between the natural environment that exists in, and draws people to, the Margaret River region, and the timber resources that were crucial in developing its economy and culture.
Once the timber was removed from the forest it was cut into the desired shapes using a chainsaw. The lower section of the sculpture is textured and scorched to evoke the role that fire plays in the forest environment, as a natural factor in its evolution and fire as a tool for land clearing by the group settlers.
The brushed areas on the aluminium canopies represent the rays of the sun coming through the crowns of the trees. The aluminium components lend something of a halo effect that serves to remind us of the sanctity of the forest and the reverence in which we should hold it.
The stone earth wall around the base functions as a seating area.

Cascading Shelter: Shadows of the Forest
Image source Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Artist: Tony Pankiw
Asset Type: Architectural sculpture, Public amenity
Year of Work: 2011
Location: Margaret River Cultural District
Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Description: This architectural and artfully designed shelter reflects the shapes found in nature and provides a shelter that can be used in all seasons.
The roof of the shelter contains several concave structural shapes that serve two purposes.
Visually, these shapes aim to echo various birds’ wings, leaves and shapes found in the forest. It articulates our environment and echoes the roofline of neighbouring buildings. The roofline is also designed to capture rainwater and feed it into the adjacent rain garden.
From inside the shelter looking upwards, you can see leaf patterns that again reiterate the natural forest habitat.
The roof is constructed from aluminium, with the legs made from steel.

Asset Type: Sculpture
Year of Work: 2014
Location: Boat Ramp, Gnarabup
Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Description: This sculpture marks the place the community gathered during the 2011 bush fires. People sought refuge under the boat ramp while fire fighters fought flames engulfing the nearby cafe, another iconic community meeting place.
The sculpture is a monument to the past, the present and the future, and salutes the bravery and united strength of a community. It provides a place for reflection on the losses suffered at a personal, community and environmental level.
In the present, the monument marks a place of daily congregation and reminds us of our inherent interconnectedness. Nothing matters but our connection with loved ones and the support and empathy of a strong network, to share in moments of joy, to face our fears and to shoulder the suffering.
Looking forwards, the monument represents a beacon of hope, positivity and light. The hexagonal column represents the rebuilding of homes with a greater ecologically sustainable footprint. The faces correspond to the rising and setting of the sun in alignment with the summer and winter solstices. The four viewing windows, orientated north, south, east and west, frame different aspects of the coastal environment.
Gnarabup is a place of refuge for all. Visitors are encouraged to think about the pioneering ancestors of the region, and the inherent community spirit of the region, despite the hardships faced.
“During the equinox, the sun beams directly down the 5th hole from above, down and inside out, illuminating the centre of the vaulted pillar and highlighting the greater universal intelligence inspiring our own innate intelligence.” – Kashmir Rouw.

Description: From a distance you’ll see a vibrant texture wrapping the wall. Flowing horizontal shapes, bright and organic, span the width of the structure.
The design mirrors the rolling hill lines of the region’s landscape. As you get closer, the artwork’s texture reveals itself as a collection of smaller painted illustrations which closely represent the heritage of Riflebutts Reserve.
Illustrations and shapes of the surroundings include waves, birds, kangaroos, weather, whales, fish, turtles, snakes, river, smoke, native vegetation, leaves and trees. These represent themes of the traditional owners and are natural icons that still exist in the Reserve today.
